Bcompany.com grew out of the need to clean out years of
accumulated stuff in Ben Compaine's basement: a full darkroom, a classic
chemistry set, programs from long ago rock concerts, magazines, 45 rpm records,
cameras.... When Ben's Mom was preparing to sell the old house, he was
confronted by a need to either save it elsewhere, toss it or sell it. Only a
year or two ago most would have been thrown out. Maybe a yard sale would
have netted a few dollars from a handful of the merchandise.
But today there are eBay, Amazon.com Yahoo! and similar
online auctions. Ben auctioned off his enlarger: sold in Seattle; his
Philadelphia Phillies autographed baseball: sold to a fan from Philly.
E-Commerce
Bcompany started on eBay on April 23, 1999 and offered its first items that day.
Since then we have completed hundreds of transactions. We have tried to be particuarly good in its communication with bidders. As
bcompany's auctions and other merchandise expanded, one clear policy
emerged: deal honestly and forthrightly with anyone bidding or buying any items. In the months
we have been involved with eBay and the others we have been gratified by the friendliness and overwhelming honesty of the bidders
we have "met."
The Internet will prove to be as profound as the printing press was in
history. The process we are engaged in here is just one example of this force -- and we're only a few years into the general use of the Internet. This is a very exciting time to be living.
